Welcome to Caer-Konig

Updated: Aug 3, 2024

Quick Links

Welcome to the tiny fishing village

The Howlbears enter Caer-Konig, the sight of the small, snow-covered town a welcome relief after their grueling journey. Mutt, his spirits lifted by the promise of safety, urges Stout and Ipa towards The Northern Light inn. The ramshackle buildings offer a hint of refuge against the biting cold.

As they approach the inn, Durin Ironbeard, their dwarven companion, takes his leave. "I'll be investigating those strange lights for a few days. If you need me, I'll be staying here at The Northern Light inn. Good luck with your endeavors, Howlbears."

With that, Durin heads off, leaving the group to continue towards the inn. As they near the entrance, a pile of snow stirs, revealing a silver dragonborn clutching an empty bottle. Mutt recognizes the signs of a heavy drinker and smiles.

Queste Complete: Escort Durin to Caer-Konig

Reward: +2 Reputation with Clan Battlehammer

Reward: 100 XP

As they approach the inn, a pile of snow stirs, revealing a silver dragonborn clutching an empty bottle. Mutt recognizes the signs of a heavy drinker and smiles.

"Well, you're in luck, Mister Trovus. It's these mysterious lights that brought us here. Now how about we get you inside, get some food into you, and you can tell us what's been going on around here."

Fizzbum, distracted by the magical lights above, catches up with the group just in time to offer Trovus a potion from his pack.

"It seems you've got a case of bad whisky drink there, sir. If you want, I've got a mushroom and fire pepper potion here somewhere that's guaranteed to perk you right back up!"

Mutt, with Uptharr's help, guides the stumbling Trovus into the inn, ordering hot meals and drinks for both of them. Azalie watches from a distance, intrigued by her first sight of a dragonborn but repelled by his state. Deciding to gather information discreetly, she blends into the background, listening to conversations and searching for useful locations.

The Lights and the Northern Light Inn

Fizzbum, curious about the lights, peers up at them again and tries to discern their nature. [investigation roll 14] He notices that the lights don't seem natural; they flicker and change colors in a way that suggests magical interference rather than a natural phenomenon. He shares his thoughts with the group.

Inside the inn, Fizzbum asks the innkeeper about an alchemist. Allie responds,

"We don't have an alchemist here, but there might be someone in the neighboring towns who can help. Easthaven or Bryn Shander would be your best bet."

He then orders a hot meal and a small ale, sits next to Mutt, and pats him on the shoulder, offering a drink. "Cheer up, Mutt. We'll figure this out."

Fizzbum also inquires about a bathhouse. Allie chuckles, "No bathhouse here, but we've got tubs. You can have a hot bath if you don't mind fetching the water yourself."

The Discussion with Trovus

Mutt, feeling the weight of the journey lift slightly as he enters The Northern Light inn, helps Trovus to a table with Uptharr's assistance. Dorf follows them in, his expression a mix of anger and exhaustion. Fizzbum, still thinking about the strange lights, joins them at the table, his mind wandering but present.

Inside the inn, Mutt helps Trovus to a table and orders a round of ale for the group.

"So, Trovus. There are odd lights hanging above your town, people seem to be afraid to leave their homes, and you say there are mysteries to be solved. What's going on in Caer-Konig?"

As they take their seats, Trovus, still a bit unsteady but comforted by the food and drink, begins to explain,

"Aye, those lights... strange things. We've had break-ins recently, things disappearing, and no one sees a thing. The lantern over the inn, a pair of goats, and even some pearls from the shop. I've been trying to patrol, but... well, you see how that goes."

Dorf listens intently, his focus shifting between the conversation and his own thoughts of tracking down the goblins. Fizzbum, meanwhile, is distractedly nodding, still pondering the magical lights.

Uptharr, always vigilant, leans forward, his brow furrowed with concern. "Trovus, you mentioned some trouble with thieves in the town. Can you tell us more about that?"

Trovus, suppressing a hiccup, nods slowly. "Aye, we've had a spate of thefts recently. No one's seen a thing, really. Just the other night, the lantern over this very inn was stolen. Cori won't let me hear the end of it because I haven't been able to find those responsible."

From behind the bar, Cori, the stern-looking innkeeper, chimes in with a sarcastic tone,

"Aye, a real knack, you have, Trovus. Maybe next time you'll find the thieves before they take the roof off."

Trovus chuckles sheepishly and continues. "Not yet, anyway. But I have a knack for this stuff."

Mutt, sipping his ale, raises an eyebrow. "A magic lantern, right? Shifting colors like the northern lights?"

Trovus grins, a bit of pride in his eyes. "That's the one. It's a town treasure, that lantern. And it's not just the lantern. We've lost a pair of goats from the tavern and a small sack of pearls carved into decorative beads from Frozenfar Expeditions."

Dorf frowns, his anger simmering just beneath the surface. "Those goblins nearly killed Kevin. Maybe we can track both the thieves and the goblins. Both seem to be heading towards Kelvin's Cairn."

Fizzbum, looking thoughtful, adds, "And while we're out there, we should keep an eye out for Chwingas. They might know something about these strange lights."

Uptharr glances at Mutt, then back at Trovus. "Do you have any leads or clues? Any idea who or what might be behind this?"

Trovus sighs, leaning back in his chair. "Tracks lead towards Kelvin's Cairn, but nothing concrete. Some think it's dwarves, desperate for food and ale. But no one's seen a dwarf sneaking around. And believe me, a quiet dwarf is a rare thing. There's something more going on here."

Mutt leans in, intrigued. "So, the tracks lead towards Kelvin's Cairn. Have you seen these tracks yourself? We just came from there, dealt with trolls and goblins along the way."

Trovus nods. "Aye, faint depressions in the snow. Hard to track, especially with the wind and all. But they're there, heading towards the mountain."

Uptharr taps his fingers on the table thoughtfully. "And what about a reward? The town doesn't seem flush with coin, but there must be something for those who can help."

Trovus chuckles, a bit of the old adventurer's spark in his eyes. "Coin, not so much. Most of the valuables in the village have already disappeared. But the townsfolk are grateful. You'd have rooms, food, and ale here at The Northern Light. And the satisfaction of solving a mystery and helping a town in need."

Mutt exchanges a glance with Uptharr, a grin spreading across his face. Uptharr nods, resolute. "Absolutely. I want to do what I can to help this town and bring those responsible to justice."

Mutt turns back to Trovus, his expression thoughtful. "We'll need to discuss it with the rest of the Howlbears. We're still recovering from our harrowing experience with the trolls. But we'll consider it."

Trovus raises his mug in a toast, his grin wide. "To friends and new possibilities. May we find those thieves and bring peace back to Caer-Konig!"

The five clink their mugs together, the promise of a potential new quest ahead of them as the fire crackles warmly in the hearth.

Azalie's Exploration of Caer-Konig

Azalie, blending into the shadows, listens carefully to the conversations around her in The Northern Light. She picks up bits and pieces about the break-ins and the strange lights, her keen ranger senses always on alert. At one point, she overhears two commoners walking the streets, saying: "I swear, these thieves are like ghosts. Not a single sighting, just tracks leading towards Kelvin's Cairn."

Deciding to gather more information, Azalie quietly roams the streets. The cold air bites at her skin, but she pulls her cloak tighter and moves silently through the snow-covered streets of Caer-Konig. She signals to Mellon, her Blood Hawk companion, who soars into the air, circling above to keep watch.

As she walks, Azalie takes note of the key locations in the small town. She finds:

DISCOVERED LOCATIONS:

  1. Frozenfar Expeditions: An adventuring outfitter run by a seasoned ranger named Atenas Swift. The shop appears well-stocked with gear, and a shed next to it houses dogsleds and healthy sled dogs.

  2. Hook, Line, and Sinker: A tavern known for its lively atmosphere and free half-pints of ale, a popular spot among the locals.

  3. Small Shrine: At the edge of town, she finds a small shrine where townsfolk go to pray. It's simple but peaceful, providing a quiet place for reflection.

Azalie blends into the shadows, observing the townsfolk who are still out and about. She overhears snippets of conversations, some complaining about the cold, others mentioning the recent thefts.

"Mellon, keep an eye on that area," she whispers, pointing towards the direction of Kelvin's Cairn. The Blood Hawk circles lower, scanning the surroundings.

Azalie moves closer to the tavern and listens to a group of locals discussing the thefts. "It's not just the lantern. We lost a pair of goats and a sack of pearls. Tracks always lead towards the Cairn, but they disappear halfway, Its Duergar dwarves, I bet my life on it!" one man grumbles.

Another adds, "Aye, and the lights! They flicker and change colors. It's like they're mocking us. I bet the Drow are involved too!"

She decides to head back to the inn, her mind racing with the new information. She gathers Mellon and makes her way quietly back to The Northern Light, ready to share her findings with the rest of the Howlbears.

Dorf at the stables

After the conversation with Trovus, Dorf leaves the warm confines of The Northern Light and heads out into the cold night air, determined to find a place for Kevin to rest. Guided by the dim light from the few lanterns still lit in town, he finds the stables. They are a small, simple structure, more of a lean-to than a proper stable. The roof is made of wooden planks, and the walls are patched with bits of cloth and other materials to keep out the worst of the wind.

Inside, the stables are cold and meager, with straw scattered across the ground for bedding. There is enough space for a few animals, but it’s clear that luxury is not a priority here. Dorf leads Kevin into one of the stalls and begins to make him comfortable.

Dorf opens the creaking door of the stables and leads Kevin inside. The shelter is meager, but it will have to do. He rubs Kevin's neck, whispering soothing words to the axe beak as he settles him down on the straw-covered ground.

"It's not much, but it's better than nothing, eh, Kevin?" Dorf mutters, as the cold air creates puffs of breath

He checks the makeshift stall, ensuring there are no sharp objects or hazards, then begins to prepare a spot for himself. He lays out his bedroll beside Kevin, intending to stay close to his companion. The memory of the goblins' attack still burns in his mind, and he feels a surge of determination to keep Kevin safe.

As Dorf settles in, he hears faint noises from the town – the murmur of voices, the occasional clink of metal, and the distant howl of the wind. Despite the discomfort, he feels a sense of duty and resolve. The stables might be cold and meager, but for now, it’s the best place to keep watch over his loyal friend.

Dorf lies back on his bedroll, keeping one hand on Kevin's side for reassurance. His mind races with thoughts of the goblins and the mysterious thieves. Perhaps, as Mutt suggested, they could track down both threats and put an end to the troubles plaguing Caer-Konig. For now, though, he focuses on getting some rest, knowing that tomorrow will bring new challenges.

Regrouping at the Northern Light:

The common room of The Northern Light is filled with the warm glow of the fire and the scent of hearty stew. The Howlbears sit around a sturdy wooden table, drinks and food spread before them. Azalie has just returned from her reconnaissance and takes a seat with the group.

Azalie leans in, her voice low but filled with urgency. "I’ve scouted the town. There’s not much here, but I did find a few key locations. Frozenfar Expeditions, an adventuring outfitter; Hook, Line, and Sinker, the tavern; and a small shrine at the edge of town. I also picked up some chatter about the recent thefts. Seems like everything leads towards Kelvin's Cairn. Tracks disappear halfway, and there are those strange flickering lights that don’t seem natural."

Mutt nods, sipping his ale thoughtfully. "We’ve heard similar from Trovus. Break-ins, things disappearing without a trace, and those tracks leading to the Cairn. He thinks it might be dwarves, but no one's seen them."

Uptharr taps his fingers on the table. "I want to help this town. If we can solve the mystery of these thefts, we might also find out more about the goblins that attacked us. It seems like everything is pointing back to Kelvin's Cairn."

Dorf, still simmering with anger, grunts. "Those goblins nearly killed Kevin. If we can track both the thieves and the goblins, that’s where we need to go."

Fizzbum, distractedly playing with his drink, chimes in. "And while we’re out there, we should keep an eye out for Chwingas. They might know something about the lights or even the thieves."

Azalie nods, her eyes serious. "I agree. We need to be prepared for whatever we might find up there. It sounds like the town’s counting on us."

The group falls into a thoughtful silence, each member considering their next move. The crackling of the fire and the low murmur of other patrons fill the room, creating a sense of calm amidst the tension.

Mutt finally speaks up. "Alright, let’s get our plans straight. For tonight, let’s decide on rooms and sleeping arrangements. We need to be well-rested for whatever comes next. And for tomorrow, do we stay here to gather more information, or head straight to Kelvin's Cairn?"

Uptharr looks around the table. "I say we make a decision together. We’ve come this far as a team. What do you all think?"

The Howlbears exchange glances, ready to share their thoughts and make a collective decision on their next steps.

Regrouping at The Northern Light Inn Continued...

The warm glow of the fire and the scent of hearty stew fill the common room of The Northern Light. The Howlbears sit around a sturdy wooden table, sharing their findings and making plans for the next day. Mutt, feeling the camaraderie of his companions, pulls out his pan flute and begins to play a lighthearted tune.

The tavern is small, and while there are few patrons, those present listen in and enjoy Mutt’s music. His melody brings a sense of warmth and cheer to the room, lifting the spirits of everyone inside. As he finishes, the patrons applaud, and Mutt finds himself with an additional 12 silver in tips and a newfound respect from the townsfolk, gaining +1 reputation with Caer-Konig.

Trovus, having stepped outside for a brief patrol, returns to the inn as Mutt finishes his song. He claps heartily, a broad smile on his face (as much as a Dragonborn can muster a smile). "Mutt, that was fantastic! You’ve got a real talent there. We could use more music like that around here."
Durin also enters, looking pleased. "Aye, Mutt, that was a fine tune. Just what we needed after a long day."
Mutt smiles, accepting their praise graciously. "Thanks, Trovus, Durin. I’m glad you enjoyed it."

Durin takes a seat at the table, his expression thoughtful. "I’ve been studying those lights for a few hours now. Still can’t figure out exactly what they are, but they don’t seem natural. They flicker and change colors, almost like they’re trying to communicate or signal something."

Azalie leans forward, intrigued. "Do you think they’re connected to the thefts?"

Durin nods slowly. "Could be. They appeared around the same time the thefts started. Whatever they are, they’re worth keeping an eye on."

Uptharr glances at his companions and then at Trovus. "Trovus, we’ve decided. The Howlbears will help your town find these thieves."

Trovus beams, clearly relieved. "That’s wonderful news! Thank you, Howlbears. Your help means a lot to us."
Allie and Cori Shorard, the inn’s proprietors, approach the table with warm smiles. Allie speaks first, "We’re so glad to hear that. You’re welcome to stay here for free tonight. Anything you need, just let us know."
Cori nods in agreement. "We hope you find the culprits quickly. This town could use some peace."

Mutt looks around at his companions. "Alright, let’s get some rest. We’ve got a big day ahead of us tomorrow."

The Howlbears agree, each heading to their respective rooms. Azalie takes Mellon with her to continue his training, while Fizzbum and Mutt share a room, determined to keep an eye on each other. Uptharr also settles in to a private room to pray and prepare for the journey in the morning, ready to face the challenges that the next day will bring. Dorf returns to the stable, to bunk with his Axe Beak, Kevin.

As the fire crackles warmly in the hearth and the inn settles into a quiet lull, the Howlbears drift off to sleep, their minds filled with thoughts of the mysteries they will uncover and the adventures that await.

Long Rest Complete

The Morning of the Next Theft

The common room of The Northern Light is filled with the warm scent of breakfast: sizzling fish, fresh bread, and steaming bowls of fish stew. The Howlbears gather around their usual table, enjoying the first meal of the day. The fire crackles in the hearth, casting a cozy glow that contrasts sharply with the biting cold outside.

Mutt, Uptharr, Dorf, Azalie, Fizzbum, and Trovus, the silver dragonborn, are seated together, discussing their plans for the day. Trovus, who frequents the tavern for breakfast, seems more sober and determined than usual, eager to hear the group's ideas. Their spirits are lifted by the prospect of helping Caer-Konig. Durin Ironbeard sits at a nearby table enjoying some stew and a hot beverage, as he reads some notes he had taken the day before.

The quiet murmur of the inn is suddenly interrupted as a breathless townsperson bursts through the door, eyes wide with urgency.

"Another theft!" the townsperson exclaims, out of breath from running. "Jarthra's sled dogs are gone, and more supplies from Frozenfar Expeditions have been stolen!"

The Howlbears exchange glances, quickly realizing the significance of this new development.

Trovus, looking more sober and determined than the night before, steps forward. "Where did this happen?" he asks, his voice steady.

The townsperson points toward the northern edge of town. "Just outside the shop. I saw those strange lights again, flickering nearby. They seemed to be hovering over the area when the theft occurred."

Allie Shorard, one of the inn’s proprietors, furrows her brow. "You know, I remember seeing those lights above the inn when our lantern was stolen. It seems like every time there's a theft, those lights are there too."

Cori Shorard nods in agreement. "Aye, those lights are more than just a distraction. They must be connected to the thieves somehow."

Mutt, his eyes narrowing with determination, finishes his last bite of breakfast. "We need to follow those tracks and find out what's going on. The thieves can't be far."

The Howlbears quickly gather their gear, ready to set out. Durin, watching from his seat by the fire, nods approvingly. "Be careful out there. Those lights are more than they seem. I’ll be here at the inn, keeping an eye on things and continuing my study of the lights."

The party steps outside into the biting cold, the fresh snow crunches underfoot as they make their way to the northern edge of town. The wind howls around them, adding to the eerie atmosphere.

At the site of the theft, Azalie finds fresh tracks leading away from the town, heading towards Kelvin’s Cairn. The Howlbears exchange determined looks, as they set out, following the tracks.

As they follow the tracks, the strange lights appear again, flickering and changing colors in the distance. The connection between the lights and the thefts is undeniable, and the Howlbears know they are on the right path.

Mutt turns to his companions. "Let's stay alert. These thieves are clever, and there's more to these lights than meets the eye."

Uptharr nods. "We’ll find them and bring peace back to Caer-Konig."

With that, the Howlbears march forward, the cold wind biting at their faces, determined to uncover the mystery of the thefts and the strange lights. The town of Caer-Konig fades into the distance behind them as they venture into the unknown.

Shapes in the Snow

The Howlbears continue, the tracks becoming clearer as they press on. The wind howls around them, and the cold bites at their exposed skin. Suddenly, through the blowing snow, they see shapes moving in the distance. The figures are faint and hard to make out, but there are at least three—a large ogre shape pulling a sled, with two smaller shapes riding on it. They can also see a crate or some kind of cargo on the sled, likely the stolen goods.

Mutt whispers to the group, "We've got company. We need to decide how to approach this."
Uptharr nods, his hand resting on the hilt of his mace. "Let's be cautious. We don't know what we're dealing with yet."
Dorf tightens his fists around his axe, his anger simmering. "I'll take the lead. Maybe I can ask them nicely to hand over the loot—after I chop their knees off."
Azalie, eyes sharp and focused, readies her bow. "Mellon and I will cover you, Dorf. Let's be cautious and approach quietly. I'm right behind you."
Fizzbum, trying to stay focused despite the cold, nods eagerly. "I'm right behind you, Mister Dorf! Maybe they're just lost travelers who want to share a cup of mushroom tea!" He pauses, looking around. "Wait, did I bring my tea set?"

As they move closer, the shapes become slightly clearer. The large figure appears to be pulling a sled, while the smaller ones seem to be riding on it. The Howlbears must decide their approach—whether to confront the figures directly or try to sneak closer for a better look, or avoid them all together.

Retro-Actions before following the thieves

Azalie, training Mellon

The night before, Azalie returned to her room to do some training with her companion, Mellon.

Azalie finds herself struggling with Mellon. She looks at the hawk from across the room. All she asked from him to retrieve objects and drop them on command. However, he retrieved the wrong item and flew around the room seemingly hard of hearing.

Azalie groans as she falls onto the bed, arms stretched out. Mellon flies over to his perch. Cocking his head back and forth. “I guess we need to get to know each other a little better.” She casts speak with animals.

“Mellon, I want to tell you about an old friend of mine. The reason I have a hard time bonding.” Azalie starts into a story weaved with terror, sadness, and heartbreak.

Azalie talked about her dog and her breaking the rules. One night the master called for Azalie. “I didn’t want to go that night. I didn’t want to go ever”, her voice changing slightly.

She was 13 by now. Her hair had grown long, her rags were tighter. She had become a great warrior, even though no one knew it. She was called by the wench to go to him.

She turned to Stay and gave him a hug. “Now remember, you have to STAY!” Her finger pointing at the ground, her face stern. “We can’t break the rules.” She left out the door, but it didn’t lock this time.

Stay saw her leave. He walked out slowly, making sure to keep her scent. Stay could tell something was not safe. The dog peeked around the hall and saw Azalie as the door was closing. Her scent had changed.

Stay approached the door. He sniffed under the door and could tell something was wrong. He could smell danger. Stay started barking, scratching at the floor, howling for her. The door swung open.

Azalie was on the ground, blood on her lip, her clothes ripped. Azalie demanded him to “Stay.” He didn’t listen. The attack was quick as the master was able to wield magic.

“NO! NO MASTER! Please, I beg of you.” her tears streaming down her face as she saw Stay withering on pain. His little body crushing under the power of the master.

Azalie ran to Stay, trying to pull him away from danger. “STOP IT! STOP STOP STOP!” Her begs are the only noises in the room. She laid on top of Stay, begging him to stop. Stay stopped breathing.

Azalie looked at the master as he stood over her. “Didn’t I tell you to follow the rules? he said calmly. Now you have to face the consequences.” Master waved his hand.

Stay started to move, a low growl coming from inside of him. His body cracked and creaked as it started to move. A rank smell emanating from his once kissable snout. He was dead but moving.

Stay was changed, from friend to foe. Azalie cried as she walked backwards, away from the dog she once would have died for. His glare solely on her. “No, what have you done?”

Master threw Azalie a jade dagger. “Kill him or he will kill you.” Then the master walked out of the room, locking her in.

Azalie came out covered in cuts and bites. The jade dagger in her hand. Blood dripping from her fingers. She walked past the master, looking him straight in the eyes. “Follow the rules.” he slammed the door. That was the last time master called for her at night. —

“So you see Mellon, I have an attachment issue. I don’t want to get attached and then lose you.” Azalie scratches his head, helping peel a few pin feathers. “I think we can make this work.” Mellon starts chirping in acceptance.

The Next Morning at Breakfast (Retro)

The common room of The Northern Light is filled with the warm scent of breakfast: sizzling fish, fresh bread, and steaming bowls of fish stew. The Howlbears gather around their usual table, enjoying the first meal of the day. The fire crackles in the hearth, casting a cozy glow that contrasts sharply with the biting cold outside.

As the group discusses their plans, Azalie finds herself unable to take her eyes off Trovus, the silver dragonborn. Curious about his horns, she reaches out and gently touches them. Trovus, feeling the unexpected touch, turns around slowly.

"Careful there, lass," he says with a mild frown, but a glint of amusement in his eyes. "These horns are for show, not for petting."

Azalie blushes furiously and pulls her hand back. "Sorry, I just... I've never seen a dragonborn up close before."

Trovus chuckles, his mood lightening. "No harm done. Just ask next time, eh? Some of my kind may take off a hand for such a gesture."

As they finish breakfast, the Howlbears make their way to the scene of the latest theft. The cold bites at their skin, but they are determined to help the town. Dorf approaches a group of townsfolk who are lingering around, hoping to gather some information.

"Seen any goblins around here? Or maybe some dwarves?" Dorf asks, his tone gruff.

One of the townsfolk shakes his head. "No goblins, but there have been whispers about Duergar dwarves. Some say they're after rare minerals in the area. They've been spotted now and then, lurking near Kelvin's Cairn."

Dorf frowns, considering the information. "Thanks," he mutters, turning back to the group.

Fizzbum, ever the optimist, suggests, "Hey everybody, maybe we should leave our axe beaks in the stables this time. It broke my heart to see them all beat up after the last battle."

The others agree, and they make arrangements to leave the mounts in the stables for safety. Mutt, meanwhile, has been investigating the recent thefts and shares his findings.

"I learned that rumors of Duergar have been increasing lately, with sightings near Kelvin's Cairn. Some townsfolk claim to have seen shadows and heard whispers in the night, but no confirmed encounters. There are no recent sightings of Drow in the immediate area, but tales of them in the region persist," Mutt explains. "Also, the lantern was mounted high above the door and secured with sturdy brackets. It would have taken considerable effort and skill to remove it without being seen. The theft likely required climbing gear or a ladder, suggesting the thief was experienced."
He continues, "The lights began appearing a few weeks ago, shortly before the thefts started. They seem to follow no pattern and appear randomly in the sky, often near the areas where items were stolen. Some believe the lights are a distraction used by the thieves."

The group spends some time gathering supplies and organizing their gear. They decide to take Mutt's sled and dogs up the mountain in pursuit of the thieves, leaving the axe beaks behind in the safety of the stables. With their plan set, they head out into the cold once more, ready to face whatever challenges lie ahead.

The Howlbears move out, their determination clear as they make their way towards the mountainous terrain, following the faint tracks left by the thieves. The adventure continues, with the promise of uncovering the mystery behind the thefts and the strange lights.

Back to the Current Scene:

Title: Following the Thieves

The Howlbears, having gathered their information and prepared their gear, leave Caer-Konig on Mutt's sled, with Stout and Ipa leading the way. The harsh wind howls around them, making the cold bite through their clothes as they move up the snowy path. Visibility is low, with snow blowing in all directions, creating a treacherous and eerie atmosphere.

Azalie, eyes sharp and focused, spots the large figure in the distance and murmurs to the group, "It's an ogre, and from the looks of those flesh pieces, I think we're dealing with an ogre zombie." She sends Mellon to scout ahead, hoping the bird can provide more insight.

Dorf, ever eager for action, tightens his grip on his axe and says with a mischievous grin, "I'll lead. Time to see what these snow ghosts are carrying."

Azalie nods, adjusting her bow. "Mellon and I will cover you. Let's move in cautiously. We don't want to alert them too soon."

He gestures for Dorf and Fizz to join him on the sled, using the terrain to stay out of sight as they move closer.

As they inch forward, the Howlbears see the ogre zombie pulling the sled, with two smaller figures on it and a crate, presumably the stolen goods. The scene is tense, with the shapes moving steadily away from the town, unaware of the approaching party.

The wind picks up, howling fiercely and driving the snow into swirling flurries that obscure vision and muffle sound. The party moves stealthily, their high rolls allowing them to get close without being seen. As they near the sled, they can make out the details: two Duergar Dwarves, one clad in leather armor with a battle axe strapped to his back, the other in heavy robes clutching a staff. They glance back occasionally but have yet to spot the party.

Mellon returns to Azalie, landing lightly on her shoulder. Through their bond, she receives the bird's report. The Duergar seem to be headed towards a rocky outcropping a few hundred yards ahead. Mellon indicates that there appears to be some kind of settlement there, though it's hard to tell through the worsening weather.

Azalie whispers to the group, "Mellon spotted a settlement up ahead, looks like that's where they're heading. If we act quickly, we can catch them by surprise before they reach it."

Dorf, eyes gleaming with anticipation, grips his axe tighter. "Let's get 'em before they get to their hidey-hole."

Uptharr, seeing the opportunity for a surprise attack, nods. "Agreed. We strike now, while we still have the element of surprise. If we wait, they may have backup at their settlement."

Fizzbum, grins despite the cold. "Let's give these thieves a Howlbear welcome they won't forget!"

Surprise Attack

The Howlbears, tracking the thieves' trail out of Caer-Konig, finally catch up to a sled pulled by an Ogre Zombie, flanked by two Duergar dwarves – one a wizard, the other a warrior. The party seizes the element of surprise.

Dorf Thimblerigger's Turn:

Dorf moves forward, his eyes blazing with fury. Muscles tensing and veins bulging with raw power, he bellows, "You’ll pay for your thievery, scum!" Charging at the Duergar wizard, axe raised high, he shouts, "DIE DIE DIE!!!"

Duergar Wizard's Ioun Stone reaction:

Indifferently, the wizard watches as Dorf's weapon arcs toward him. The faintly glowing Ioun stones orbiting his head flare with energy, and instantly, three identical duplicates spring into existence, each mirroring his movements perfectly, making it nearly impossible to identify the true target.

His axe cleaves through one of the wizard’s mirror images, shattering it into shards of light that dissipate into the cold air. The real wizard and his remaining duplicates smirk at Dorf's frustration.

Uptharr's Turn:

Uptharr moves closer, his eyes filled with determination. "By the light of Helm, your trickery ends here!" he declares, whirling his flail through the air and striking one of the mirror images. The duplicate shatters into a burst of magical light, leaving one more illusory form alongside the wizard. With a fervent cry, "Your magic is waning, wizard! Prepare to feel the wrath of Lathander!" Uptharr swings his bronze mace, smashing the final shimmering duplicate. The illusion shatters into radiant fragments, leaving the wizard exposed and vulnerable before him.

Azalie's Turn:

Azalie steps forward, muttering an incantation as she notches her blessed arrow. "You won’t get away," she says anxiously, releasing the arrow. It gleams with divine energy, shimmering with an aura of icy thorns. The arrow strikes the ogre zombie, dealing 16 points of searing radiant damage. The divine energy ignites, causing a burst of icy thorns to explode outward. "Shit! Let’s see what your stones can do now?" she mutters thoughtfully. The explosion engulfs the Duergar warrior and wizard, dealing 4 points of damage to each.

Mutt Bromwell's Turn:

Mutt, seeing the chaos, casts Shatter at the Duergar wizard. "A spellcaster! Take care of him first!" he shouts. An intense noise erupts around the wizard, who takes 3 points of damage after a successful save. Mutt then strums his lute, a powerful melody resonating through the snowy landscape. "Dorf, you’ve got this!" he calls, imbuing the barbarian with renewed vigor and determination through bardic inspiration.

Fizzbum Lilypad's Turn:

Fizzbum moves into position, gleefully casting Entangle at the group. "How nice of you to all stand together! Let’s see if I can keep you that way!" Thick vines spring up around the Duergar and Ogre Zombie. The Ogre struggles but fails its save, becoming ensnared by the vines. Fizzbum then casts Shillelagh on his staff, excitedly muttering, "All right, Lucky Staff! Let’s do this!" The wooden weapon glows with magical strength and power.

Ogre Zombie's Save:

The Ogre Zombie, ensnared by the vines, struggles but cannot break free.

As the surprise attack unfolds, the two Duergar dwarves shout to each other in their guttural language.

The warrior, eyes wide with shock, yells, "Grulnar! We're under attack! Get those spells ready!"'

The wizard, glancing around frantically, shouts back, "Hold them off, Durak! I'll deal with these pests. Defend the sled at all costs!"

Duergar Warrior's Save:

The Duergar warrior manages to evade the vines, remaining free and ready to fight.

Duergar Wizard's Save:

The Duergar wizard also avoids the grasping vines, remaining unentangled but fully aware of the threat before him.

The Howlbears stand ready, prepared to continue their assault as the Duergar regroup, barking commands in their guttural language. The wizard, now fully exposed, glares at his assailants, readying his next move amidst the chaos.

Returning to Town

The party quickly gathers themselves, looting the fallen Duergar and securing the crate of supplies. With their task accomplished, they begin their descent back down the snowy mountain path towards Caer-Konig. The journey is arduous, the cold biting at their faces, but their spirits are lifted by the success of their mission. The sled dogs move steadily, pulling the crate of supplies through the snow as the party makes their way back to the town. As they approach Caer-Konig, the warm lights of the Northern Light inn come into view, a welcoming sight against the harsh tundra backdrop.

At the Northern Light:

Entering the Northern Light, the party is greeted by the concerned faces of the innkeepers, the Shorard sisters, and the town speaker, Trovus. They eagerly ask about the party's findings.

"We tracked the thieves to close to their hideout and managed to recover this crate of supplies," Explains Mutt. "We had a tough battle with an ogre zombie and some Duergar, but we prevailed. Unfortunately, the Duergar wizard escaped, but we know he's out there."

Trovus nods, his expression serious. "Duergar. What in the hell do those underground filth want with our humble fishing village." Trovus thinks and shakes his head, "Good work. But we need to find the rest of the stolen goods, including the lantern the sisters are missing."

The sisters look at the party with pleading eyes. "That lantern means a lot to us," Says Cori.

"Please, will you track down the rest of the stolen items and bring our lantern back? You are welcome to stay at the inn as long as you need to rest and recover," says Allie, as she walks up to Mutt with a warm smile.
"Thank you for all you've done so far," she says softly, her eyes twinkling. "Here, have something to eat and drink. You must be exhausted." Allie first hands Mutt a steaming bowl of stew and a drink, her fingers brushing his as she does. "We really appreciate your help," she adds, lingering for a moment and giving him a playful wink.

The party exchanges glances, understanding the importance of the task ahead. With a renewed sense of duty, they prepare to head out again, determined to recover the remaining stolen goods and bring peace back to Caer-Konig.

Azalie stays quiet while traveling back to town. Her expression tensed, almost too tense.

'How, how did you miss that many times?' Azalie secretly beats herself up for letting the wizard get away. She would have at least liked to have questioned him, and maybe a little torture.

As the group enters the tavern Azalie hears Mutt giving up the studded leather. Azalie doesn't mind that it is black. "I'll put this to use. We may need it if we go after the wizard." Azalie grabs a stein of water and gulps it down. "We are going after the wizard, right?" she looks back at each of her friends waiting for an answer.

Mutt smiles warmly at Allie as she puts a bowl and a mug in front of him.

“Well now! I could hardly hope for a warmer welcome. Your hospitality is only surpassed by your charm, miss Allie.”

Mutt graciously accepts the bowl and tankard. He downs the tankard in three large pulls and sets it back down. He takes his time eating the stew, laughing with the party and retelling the tale of their encounter with the duergar to the tavern patrons. Mutt finishes his stew and pushes away from the table.

“Right then. I’m off to shore up my supplies and see what I can do about this depressing thing.” Mutt motions to the duergar studded leather armor. “Gods…

"Thank you Miss Allie!" Fizz exclaims as he shoves some tasty bites into his mouth. "Cold weather always makes me hungry... not that I've seen much cold weather before this trip, but I can tell you that it definitely does the trick! That and swimming! I like to swim, but only when the eels are not in season. They get super bitey when it's egg laying season! I had to bonk one on the head with my staff last time, to get him off my leg!" Catching a glimpse of a foaming mug coming across the bar, Fizz breaks off his Eel story, wraps his little hands around the mug, and slurps down a gulp of ale. Grab…

Azalie makes out the shape as an Ogre. She wonders if it is a beast of burden, is he being controlled? She remembered the sadness Fizz experienced when fighting the polar bears.

“I agree Fizz. We should totally leave our friends here.” Azalie thinks it’s a great idea. Then a flash of their last battle enters her mind. “but who will keep them safe if they aren’t with us?”

Azalie takes a few moments to scour the area. She is knowledgeable about many creatures. She looks for feathers, hair, print patterns, anything that helps indentigy them. “I’m going to send Mellon for a look. His eyesight is better than us and he won’t be noticed at the right height.”

Azalie…

Mutt sees the large ogre-shaped figure in the distance with a mixture of relief and apprehension. Assuming these are the thieves, it doesn't look like they're starving orphans. On the other hand, something that big looks like it could do a lot of damage.

Mutt looks at the trail left by the sled to see if there are any tracks left by something other than the ogre or the sled. The strange lights make him nervous. Just because they can't see something doesn't mean it's not there. Investigation roll: 5, 7 total Seeing Dorf and Fizz leaving their axebeaks behind, Mutt silently gestures for the pair to join him on the dog sled. They're small and don't take up much space.…
