The night before, in Brynstroth
As the evening settles in, Fizzbum ponders their recent encounter with the yetis. Reflecting on ways to better protect himself, he playfully considers shrinking himself to ride in Uptharr's backpack or blending into the snowy landscape as a boulder or shrub. Finally, he transforms into a fluffy sled dog and dozes off, dreaming of the next adventure and new creatures to discover.
Azalie's Night
Azalie spends her entire night at the great hall, moving from table to table and talking to the remaining dwarves who are still awake after 11:00 PM. The hall is quiet, with only a handful of dwarves who have stayed up late, nursing their ales and sharing stories.
She approaches the first dwarf, a burly fellow with a thick beard and tired eyes. "Excuse me," she begins, "have you noticed the sun not coming up?"
The dwarf squints at her, shaking his head. "Sun? I don't ever go outside much. Didn't even know it wasn’t coming up."
Undeterred, Azalie moves to another table where two dwarves are engaged in a low conversation. She repeats her question, and one of them nods slowly. "Aye, it’s been dimmer than usual outside. Heard some rumors that the sun isn’t shining as bright."
The second dwarf shrugs. "We’re miners. We prefer underground, so it doesn’t really bother us. Weather changes don’t matter much down here."
Azalie scribbles down their responses, moving on to the next group. "Have your animals been acting strange?" she asks a dwarf with a scar running down his cheek.
He scratches his head. "Can’t say I’ve noticed. Don’t have much to do with animals."
Her next question about monster sightings gets a more animated response. "Monsters? Aye, we’ve heard from the trading dwarves that attacks are getting worse. Raids on human settlements are increasing."
Another dwarf chimes in, "If yer heading to Caer-Konig tomorrow, watch out. We’ve heard word of Ice Trolls in the vicinity. Nasty creatures, they are."
Azalie thanks them for the information. "What’s in this food? It’s amazing!" she adds, trying to lighten the mood.
The dwarves laugh heartily. "Dwarven food is the best!" one of them declares proudly.
Satisfied with the information she’s gathered, Azalie heads to her room. She trains Mellon for a while, the bird getting distracted by thoughts of Fizz, who offered him a piece of meat that first time.
As the night deepens, Azalie feels the weight of her memories. Each passing night brings more thoughts of her master and his powerful control over the weather. Shaking off the dark memories, she decides to spend the night crafting to help her think.
In the morning, Fizzbum visits the Dwarven kitchen for breakfast, inquiring about a local alchemist shop. He also chats with Durin about camouflage techniques and checks on Peck's supplies, ensuring everything is ready for the journey.
"Morning, Durin. I was wondering, do you dwarves have any special tricks for staying camouflaged on the mountain? Those yetis sure have a knack for sneaking up on you."
Durin chuckles, taking a sip of his hot tea. "Aye, lad, those yetis are a sly bunch. We dwarves rely on blending in with the environment as best we can. Wearing whites and grays to match the snow helps a bit. But the real trick is moving slowly and quietly. Yetis can sense movement and noise from quite a distance."
Fizzbum nods, "That makes sense. I was thinking about transforming into something less noticeable, like a snowball or a boulder, but it seems like I’d still stand out."
Durin strokes his beard thoughtfully. "Well, if ye can take the form of a local creature, that might help. Something like a snowy owl or a hare would be less likely to draw attention. Of course, the best camouflage is to avoid being seen in the first place. Use the terrain to your advantage—rocks, ridges, anything that can break your outline."
Fizzbum's eyes light up. "A snowy owl! Now that’s an idea. Thanks, Durin. I’ll have to practice my transformations a bit more. Creatures that fly or swim still give me quite a bit of trouble."
Durin smiles warmly. "Glad to be of help, lad. Just remember, even the best camouflage won't save you if you're not careful. Always be on the lookout, and trust your instincts."
Fizzbum grins, feeling more prepared for the journey ahead. "Got it. I'll keep that in mind. By the way, do you know if there's an alchemist shop around here? I’d like to stock up on a few supplies before we head out."
Durin shakes his head. "I'm afraid there’s no alchemist shop in Brynströth, lad. We dwarves aren't much for alchemy, so we don’t have a place for trading those kinds of supplies. Best to stock up when we reach Caer-Konig."
Fizzbum nods, finishing his breakfast with renewed enthusiasm. "Thanks, Durin. I’ll make do with what I have for now. See you shortly."
With that, Fizzbum heads off to make his final preparations, feeling more confident and excited for the adventure to come.
Mutt, nursing a hangover from the previous night, rehydrates and eats some dried rations to settle his stomach. He asks around for a pair of goggles to shield his eyes from the snow and buys a replacement healing potion. After feeding Stout and Ipa,
Azalie stops by the potion store for some provisions and then heads straight to her friends. They are heading to Caer-Konig to help Durin investigate the strange lights.
Even though she’s smiling, inside she feels doom and dread, feeling an overwhelming need for caution. She keeps her eyes and ears focused on anything that may cause danger.
“Ok, Howlbears, let’s be adventurous and cautious. We don’t want another yeti attack. I just can’t bear to see you all hurt again.” Azalie is sensitive to others' pain, almost like she can feel it herself.
Heading out to Caer-Konig
The storm from the night before has passed, leaving the entire region blanketed in fresh, deep snow. The Howlbears set out from the safety of Brynstroth early in the morning, under a sky where the sun barely rises above the horizon, casting the landscape in a dim twilight. The air is crisp and biting, each breath creating small clouds of steam that hang in the air momentarily before dissipating.
Mutt, shouting towards Durin as they depart, "What have you heard about these strange lights?! Any rumors on what they might be?!"
Durin responds with a thoughtful nod. "Not much beyond what I've told you already, Mutt. Just strange, ethereal lights appearing at night, causing unease among the townsfolk. Some say it's magic, others think it might be something more sinister. That's what we need to find out."
As they descend from Kelvin’s Cairn, the path becomes steeper and more treacherous, with patches of ice hidden beneath the fresh snow. The party’s Axe Beaks navigate the terrain with sure-footed grace, while Mutt’s sled dogs pull the sled steadily behind. The landscape is a breathtaking yet harsh tableau of white, with the occasional rocky outcrop breaking the monotony. The snow-covered foothills spread out before them, a pristine but deadly expanse. The silence is almost palpable, broken only by the crunch of snow underfoot and the occasional gust of wind that sends a flurry of snowflakes swirling through the air.
As they make their way through the foothills, the party notices subtle changes in the environment. The trees become sparser, their branches heavy with frost. Animal tracks crisscross the snow, some fresh and others almost buried by the windblown drifts. The path ahead narrows, flanked by tall, jagged rocks that create a natural corridor through the snow.
Up ahead, Durin stops abruptly, raising a hand to signal the party to halt. "Hold on," he says, peering intently at something on the ground. "There’s something not right here."
The party dismounts and gathers around, observing the area Durin pointed out. The snow is disturbed, not by the natural movement of animals, but by something larger and more deliberate. Deep gouges and claw marks are etched into the frozen ground, and there are patches where the snow has been brushed aside, revealing bare, icy earth.
Azalie, ever cautious, steps forward and examines the tracks. "These marks," she says, "they’re not natural. Something large, with claws. And look here," she points to a broken branch hanging low, "this was snapped recently. We need to be on guard."
Fizzbum looks around, his ears twitching. "I’ve got a bad feeling about this," he mutters. "Feels like an ambush waiting to happen."
Uptharr, always the protector, readies his weapon. "Whatever it is, we’re ready for it."
As the party debates their next move, they notice more signs that heighten their suspicions. Small piles of snow that look unnaturally disturbed, like something was dragged through it. The sound of ice cracking underfoot, too regular and deliberate to be just the shifting of natural ice.
The Ice Troll
Suddenly, with a roar that shakes the ground, an Ice Troll emerges from behind a rocky outcrop, hurling a massive chunk of ice towards Mutt. The projectile hurtles through the air, aiming directly for him. Mutt's eyes widen in surprise as the deadly ice chunk bears down on him.

1. Azalie's Turn

Bonus Action: Casting Hunter's Mark at Giant Ice Troll. "Fizz! Can you get the animals moving? Maybe we can distract this brute." Azalie sends Mellon to help Fizz herd the animals away from danger. Azalie extends her hand, murmuring an incantation as her eyes lock onto the giant ice troll. A faint, glowing mark appears on the troll's body, ensuring Azalie's strikes will find their mark.
Standard Action: Attacking Giant Ice Troll with Azalie's Bow. Powerfully, Quickly turning towards the Giant, 'Why can’t you just stay on the mountain?' Fires an arrow of gentle echoes. Azalie draws her bow and releases an arrow of gentle echoes, watching it streak through the air with unerring accuracy. The arrow strikes the massive troll, its magic shimmering as it takes hold, though it deals no physical harm. She commands the enchantment to impose disadvantage on the troll, and the creature visibly begins to move sluggishly.
2. Dorf Thimblerigger's Turn
Movement: Moving From: T60 L45, Moved to: T35 L40. Dorf charges forward, his boots crunching through the snow and ice as he covers the 25 feet to the ice troll with powerful strides. He steps up into melee range, his axe glinting in the dim light as he prepares to strike.

Angrily, Dorf's eyes blaze with fury as he grips his axe tightly, 'I'll carve ya up like a winter feast!' he roars, his voice echoing through the icy canyon as he charges forward, rage fueling every step." Dorf's muscles bulge as a primal fury overtakes him, his eyes narrowing with fierce determination. A guttural roar escapes his lips, echoing through the icy terrain as he charges toward the ice troll, axe raised high.

Dorf swings his dwarven axe +1 with a mighty roar, the blade barely cutting through the ice troll's tough hide. As it calls out loudly as if speaking to someone or something, it swings its massive claws at Dorf." The giant ice troll swipes its massive claw at Dorf, but misses, its attack slicing through the frigid air just inches from Dorf's head.

Both trolls, however, rip through the vegetation with raw power, their immense strength preventing them from being captured.

Suddenly, a dense, chilling fog billows out from the mephit, rapidly spreading and engulfing the battlefield. The fog cloud envelops Uptharr, Azalie, Fizzbum, Mutt, Durin, Durin’s mule, all of the Axe Beaks, and Mutt’s sled dogs in a thick, blinding mist. Visibility drops to nearly zero as the battlefield is consumed by the frosty haze, obscuring friends and foes alike.

Standard Action: Melee Attack: The next Ice Mephit lunges through the dense fog, its claws finding their mark on Azalie’s Axe Beak. The blinded creature squawks in pain as the sharp claws rake across its side, dealing 4 damage.
Ice Mephit #5's Turn
Standard Action: Melee Attack: The next Ice Mephit swoops down towards Dorf’s Axe Beak, Kevin, its claws ready to strike. However, the fog obscures its vision, causing it to miss its target entirely.
Ice Troll's Turn
Standard Action: Melee Attack: The Ice Troll roars in Trollspeak, "Gorzhak kraknak, urbak grozkh! G'naark shraa!" as it lunges towards the blinded Uptharr with its claw. The Ice Troll’s first claw rips through the air, striking Uptharr with a devastating blow. Uptharr winces in pain as the claw slashes through his armor, dealing 10 points of slashing damage and an additional 8 points of cold damage, for a total of 18 points.
KILL SHOT! - Standard Action: Melee Attack: The Ice Troll’s next attack is even more brutal, its claw tearing through Uptharr’s defenses. The vicious swipe deals 8 points of slashing damage and 6 points of cold damage, for a total of 14 points. Uptharr collapses into the snow, his lifeblood staining the icy ground as he lies dying.
Standard Action: Bite Attack: The troll then lunges at Dorf with a vicious bite, snarling in Trollspeak, "Groshak dorff, grog nash grul! Shaar zag karn, shakkra!" The troll’s jagged teeth snap just inches from Dorf’s face as the halfling nimbly ducks under the attack. The icy jaws clench shut with a resounding snap, sending a spray of frost into the air. Dorf rolls to the side, narrowly evading the troll’s fierce bite.

Bonus Action: Cast Spell: "Please don’t die Mr. Uptharr!" Fizzbum quickly mutters an incantation, his hands glowing with a soft green light as he casts Healing Word on Uptharr, restoring 12 HP. Uptharr’s eyes flutter open as the healing magic flows through him, bringing him back to consciousness and easing his wounds.

Nervously, Azalie sees her Axe Beak fall and then loses sight of her feathered friend. The exposition shields her from the heart-wrenching sight. "I’m coming!" Azalie moves to get a better aim on the goblin attacking Kevin. She releases a fire arrow.
Azalie fires a carefully aimed shot at the Tundra Goblin, her fire arrow striking true. The arrow deals 10 damage, plus 5 damage from Hunter’s Mark, and an additional 1 fire damage, for a total of 16 damage. The goblin screeches in pain as the flames engulf it, killing it!
Bonus Action: Cast a Bonus Spell
Nervously, Azalie chants and the hunter’s mark moves to the Goblin. She whistles her hawk back to her.

Excited, The Tundra Goblin swings its weapon at Kevin, shouting in Goblin, "Grishnak! Kill!" The goblin’s eyes gleam with malice as it strikes.
The Tundra Goblin swings its weapon at Kevin, but its strike goes wide, missing the axe beak entirely. Kevin dodges nimbly, evading the goblin’s clumsy attack.
Tundra Goblin #2 Standard Action: Melee Attack
The next Tundra Goblin lands a solid hit on Kevin, dealing 4 damage. The axe beak staggers, badly injured and on the brink of collapse from the brutal strike.

An Ice Mephit swoops down on Valorcrest and slashes with its claw, scoring a critical hit. The sharp claws rake across Valorcrest’s feathers, dealing 4 damage. Valorcrest screeches in pain from the vicious attack.
Ice Mephit #2 Standard Action: Melee Attack
The Ice Mephit slashes at Kevin with its icy claws. The blow deals 3 damage, and Kevin, the axe beak, collapses to the ground, now dying from the grievous wound.
Fizzbum Lilypad's Turn:

Standard Action: Cast a Spell
Fizzbum conjures a flame in his hand and hurls it at an Ice Mephit. The fireball strikes the Mephit, dealing 6 damage. The Mephit’s weakness to fire causes the damage to double to 12 damage, engulfing the creature in flames and killing it instantly. The Mephit explodes in a burst of icy shards as it perishes.
Bonus Action: Cast a Bonus Spell (Die Roll: 6)
Fizzbum quickly casts Healing Word on the riding mule, his voice imbued with magical energy. The spell restores 7 hit points, and the mule staggers as it awakens, its wounds beginning to heal.
Ice Mephit's Death Burst:
Character Feature: Icy Death Burst
When the mephit dies, it explodes in a burst of jagged ice. Each creature within 5 feet of it must make a DC 10 Dexterity saving throw, taking 1d8 slashing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.
Save Throw: SAVE THROW 23 VS. DC: 10 = Success
Success - Valorcrest swiftly dodges as the Ice Mephit explodes in a burst of icy shards, making its DEX save. Thanks to its quick reflexes, Valorcrest avoids the worst of the icy fragments and takes only half damage from the death burst.
Icy Death Burst: Valorcrest takes 8 damage from the Ice Mephit’s death burst, but thanks to its successful DEX save, the damage is halved to 4 damage. The axe beak shakes off the icy shards, still standing despite the chilling impact.
Durin Ironbeard's Turn:

Calmly, Durin steadies his aim, focusing on one of the Ice Mephits attacking an Axe Beak. With a determined look, he mutters, "Time to send you back to the ice, you frosty pest." He lines up his shot, ready to take down the frosty creature.
Durin releases the bolt from his crossbow, but it sails past the Ice Mephit, missing its mark. He grits his teeth in frustration, muttering, "Blast it! Hold still, you slippery fiend!"
Uptharr's Turn:

Standard Action: Melee Attack
Angrily, Uptharr advances toward the Ice Mephit, his eyes locked onto the creature. As he closes the distance, he says with a calm, steely resolve, "Your icy tricks end here. Face the light of justice!"
Uptharr swings his flail with a mighty force, smashing into the Ice Mephit. The blow lands solidly, dealing 8 damage, and causing the mephit to screech in pain as the impact cracks its icy exterior.

Uptharr follows up with an off-hand attack using his mace, but the swing goes wide and misses the Ice Mephit. The creature narrowly avoids the blow, its icy form shifting just out of reach.

...Azalie stabs her dagger and arrow deep into the troll. Her arrow stays deeply imbedded, Azalie tries pulling it out. After a few tugs she just gives up and wraps her hand around her dagger. Stabbing the beast over and over, spit flying from her gritted teeth.
"Just die, cough, cough, just die." her voice tapering off as she looks up from the stabbing to see her friends looking at her. She's scared they are judging her and hoping they cry out in approval.
“Oh my God, not again.” Azalie hates when her gut is right.
