Recovering the Sled of Ingots
As the polar bears run off chasing the goblins into the tundra, the party regroups by the sled full of ingots.
Dorf grins as the bears attack the goblins.
"Get em big Wiggles!!!!"
He goes to the wagon to see if he can perceive why the goblins would burn the wagon instead of just running. What could they be trying to hide?
“Let’s get this sled moving before the polar bears come back for us. They looked pretty hungry.” Azalie stows her bow. “Call over your animals. We need a few brave ones to pull this sleigh.”
Azalie is very worried. The smoke from the burning wagon will attract attention.
Mutt looks nervously off in the distance beyond the burning wagon as the polar bears continue to pursue the fleeing goblins.
"Yeah...I think you're right. Let's get some of the axebeaks hooked up to the sled and get out of here. I should have space on my sled for Fizz and Dorf."
The party regroups by the sled, as the goblins screech and scream as they run off into the dark tundra. Azalie coaxes the dogs and axe beaks to join the party near the sled. Uptharr spends a few minutes laying the slain goblins together and goes any valuables they were carrying
Among some copper pieces, and scraps of leather and furs they used as armor, the party discovers one of the goblins was carrying a locket that appears to have belonged to the slain dwarf Oobok. It has a picture of a female dwarf inside and Ooboks name etched on the back. A few goblins were carrying some acorns, a lucky clover leaf and some kind of meat, that appears to be liver.
Fizzbum approaches Uptharr as he returns from inspecting the goblins.
"Mr. Uptharr sir? Would you mind pulling out this arrow? It seems to have grown attached to my butt cheek!"
Uptharr turns to Fizzbum with a hint of a smile softening his typically stern expression.
"Of course, Fizzbum. Let's get that taken care of right away. A brave gnome like you shouldn't be troubled by such nuisances."
With a reassuring nod, he carefully removes the arrow. Fizzbum winces as it's removed, and Uptharr patches up the wound as best he can.
The party gathers up the loot as they load the sleds.
Azalie starts working on the harnesses.
“Gladly I didn’t severe these straps.”
“We should head out quickly. The smoke is going to attract, things.”
Azalie shudders thinking about what could be coming in the dark.
“I will need some leather. Does anyone have any ready?”
“Two axebeaks my work. Mine and another?”
Azalie work's quickly to attach the sled to the axe beaks, using the harnesses that were originally intended for the Dwarves sled dogs. It takes 15 minutes to rig the sled, and attach them to the large birds. Once the birds are attached, they can pull/carry a total of 840 lbs.
Meanwhile, Dorf finishes his search of the goblin wagon.
The wagon has burned out after 15 minutes, while the party loads up the two sleds with Ingots and attaches two Axe Beaks to the Dwarves sled. There isn't anything but charred bits of the wagon left - nothing that Dorf finds interesting or that lets him know why they burned their wagon to the ground.
Mutt hurries over to his sled and guides Stout and Ipa over to the dwarves’ sled. While Azalie works to rig the harnesses to fit over the axebeaks, Mutt begins helping Uptharr position and distribute ingots between the two sleds and Uptharr’s axebeak. Satisfied the distributed ingots are secure, he nods and smiles at Azalie’s handiwork.
“Well done, Az. Let’s get out of here before anyone comes to investigate that smoke or those bears decide they’re still hungry.”
Mutt looks back in the direction he thinks the town is.
“I think the way back to town is that way. What do you think, Az?”
Azalie glances back at where the bears were. Only red snow and a few green and red bits of flesh remain.
“I’m so glad we didn’t have to kill those bears. Hopefully they filled up before heading off. I’d hate for another group to be attacked.”
she shrugs her shoulders in a form of acceptance, wipes of some snow from her cloak. She turns back as Mutt starts to gesture the direction of town.
“I do believe that is the right direction. Let’s head out.”
Azalie seems to have them all fooled. She’s scared that their trek to town will be full of encounters. It is night, in the tundra, the sun hasn’t risen in many moon phases, the yetis…
Fallen Yetis
Time: 9:30 PM
After securing the sleds with the precious steel ingots, the party embarks on their return journey to Bryn Shander under the cloak of night. The trek is arduous, with the icy wind biting at their faces and the snow crunching underfoot. They retrace their steps across the tundra, the stark, cold landscape offering little comfort, their breaths creating fleeting clouds of vapor in the frigid air.
As they navigate the familiar path, an unsettling scene unfolds before them: two large Yetis lay lifelessly on the ground. The Yetis, known for their might and ferocity, show no external wounds, their eyes wide open in a frozen stare of shock... or perhaps fear. The positioning of the bodies and the tracks surrounding the area suggest they were on the party's trail before meeting their untimely demise.
The Yetis' fur is frosted over, and their skin is pulled tight, almost translucent in places, as if their very life essence has been siphoned away. The ground around them is disturbed, indicating a struggle, yet there are no signs of conventional injuries.
The party's sled dogs and Axe beaks sense something amiss, and exhibit signs of unease. The dogs whine and tug at their harnesses, reluctant to advance, while the Axe beaks grow restless, their calls filled with anxiety.
As the party inspects the grim scene of the fallen yetis, a sudden, unnatural cold descends upon them, more piercing than the typical chill of the tundra night. The temperature plummets rapidly, their breaths turning into visible puffs of frost as an eerie silence envelops the area, broken only by the soft howling of the wind. This bone-chilling cold seems to seep into their very core.
As the unnatural cold descends upon the group, Uptharr steadies himself, recognizing the signs of an otherworldly presence. He announces,
"I will seek the guidance of the divine to unveil our hidden foe."
Closing his eyes, he invokes his Divine Sense, allowing the divine energy to pierce through the veil of the creeping frost, his senses attuned to the celestial, fiendish, or undead forces nearby.
As he detects the Ice Wraith, he confirms,
"My senses do not deceive us—the cold we feel is the breath of an undead wraith, lurking in our midst!"
Uptharr draws his weapons.
The Ice Wraith
As Uptharr's divine senses confirm the presence of the Ice Wraith, the creature begins to reveal itself. Initially, a subtle shift occurs in the air around them; a faint, ghostly mist begins to coalesce, swirling as if driven by an unseen force. The temperature drops even further, and the mist tightens into a more defined shape, manifesting the Ice Wraith's ethereal form.
From the swirling snow and shadow, the wraith materializes, its appearance chillingly serene yet undeniably menacing. Its body is translucent and shimmering with a cold, bluish light, casting an eerie glow on the snow around it. The wraith's eyes, two piercing points of light in the spectral haze, fixate on the party.
With a slow, deliberate motion, it floats closer, the air around it crackling with the frost it commands.

He recalls, Ice Wraiths are thought to be the bitter manifestations of the icy wilderness itself, born from the coldest, most desolate reaches of the world. Legends tell of their creation as a curse set upon the land by a vengeful deity, Auril the Frostmaiden, who sought to embody her wrath and sorrow in a form that would haunt the living. These beings are creatures of ice and shadow and are imbued with a fragment of Auril`s divine essence, They are pure evil and exist to drain the very life force from their victims for Auril`s pleasure.

Move Action: Moved 30 feet - Azalie, seeking a clear shot, distances herself from her companions.
“Everyone be cautions. Don’t let this aberration touch you.” Azalie moves slowly out of the middle of the group. “Spread out. Take your time. Don’t try to draw too much attention to yourself.” Azalie tiptoes around Mutt and the animals. “This is going to be a battle.” “Oh! It’s weak to fire, I think.” Azalie can’t light anymore arrows. She’s out of oil flasks.

She draws her bow and fires, the string humming as she releases the arrow towards the ghostly foe. Despite her skill, the arrow slices through the cold air, missing its target as the Ice Wraith`s form shifts unpredictably, the projectile disappearing into the snowy darkness beyond.

Mutt directs a string of biting insults imbued with arcane energy at the Ice Wraith, aiming to disrupt its malevolent focus, but the Ice Wraith does not seem to be affected by his attempt.

Fizzbum conjures a flickering flame in his hand, the warm light contrasting sharply with the icy backdrop. The fire engulfs part of the wraith, dealing 12 points of damage, causing a chilling hiss of anger from the creature as the flames momentarily disrupt its cold, spectral form.

Dorf quickly goes through his saddle bags and pulls out a blanket and an oil flask and begins dousing the blanket and his claw gauntlets with oil.
With a spark of ingenuity flashing in his eyes, Dorf rummages through his saddlebags, swiftly pulling out a blanket and an oil flask. He begins to drench the blanket in oil, ensuring every fiber is soaked, then methodically applies the oil to his frostclaw gauntlets. A sly grin crosses his lips as he prepares his plan.

As the cold air bites at his skin, Dorf`s eyes blaze with an intense fury, signaling the onset of his barbarian rage. His muscles tense, veins bulging, he lets out a primal roar that echoes across the icy tundra as he holds up his oil soaked blanket. This rage looks different, small tufts of hair, and bear-like features seem to encompass the small halfling...

Uptharr extends his hand and gently touches Dorf, murmuring a sacred invocation. A subtle, protective energy envelops Dorf as he casts Resistance on the halfling.

Move Action: Moved 20 feet - The Ice wraith floats with unnatural speed, moving right through the sled dogs and stops right next to Fizzbum.

As the Ice Wraith extends its ghostly hand to drain the life from its foe, a chilling, unearthly whisper fills the air, a sound like the howling wind mixed with the faintest echoes of despairing souls.

Fizzbum: Failure - As the Ice Wraith`s hand connects with Fizzbum, a deep, unnerving chill penetrates his body, visibly draining the color and vitality from his face.

As Fizzbums life is drained, it seems to revitalize the Wraith, restoring 10 life to the undead.
Bonus Action: Chilling Aura - The creature emits a bone chilling aura in a 15 foot radius around it. When a creature enters the area, or starts its turn in the area, it becomes covered in frost and must make a DC 13 CON Save Throw or become Chilled until the end of its next turn. When chilled, the target moves at 1/2 speed, and loses reactions and can only make a Standard Action while Chilled.

In a haunting, raspy voice that seems to echo from the depths of a frozen abyss, the Ice Wraith intones, "Feel the embrace of eternal winter," as it unleashes its chilling aura, the words themselves seeming to freeze in the air.
As the Ice Wraith's chilling aura unfolds, a cold sphere forms around the wraith, extending out 15 feet in all directions. The air around them grows colder still...

Uptharr: Success - The frost that begins to form on his armor and skin dissipates as Uptharr calls upon his inner strength, and is not affected by the Chill that is emitted from the Wraith.
Ipa: Failure - Ipa is caught in the icy embrace of the wraith`s chilling aura, whimpers as a frosty sheen forms over its fur, its movements slowing as the intense cold seeps into its bones, and it huddles close to the ground, trying to find warmth.
Stout: Success - Stout manages to resist the brunt of the cold, its fur bristling with defiance as it begins to bark and growl with excitement at the wraith.
Valorcrest: Failure - Uptharr`s Axe beak, Valorcrest, is caught in the chilling aura of the Ice Wraith and shudders violently as the cold seeps into its feathers, causing frost to form along its beak and legs. It squawks in distress, its movements becoming sluggish.
Azalie's Axe Beak: Failure - Azalie`s axe beak shivers uncontrollably, its feathers frosting over as the wraith`s chilling aura saps its warmth and leaves it visibly weakened and sluggish.
Dorf: Failure - Dorf's body tenses as the icy grip of the wraith's chilling aura envelops him, causing his skin to pale and a thin layer of frost to form on his clothing and hair. Azalie attempts to stay calm, she can feel the fear creeping in. She holds back her screams, sucking in her broken breath. Bonus Action: You are attempting to use: Oil Flask and tinder to light an arrow.

"Everyone, heed my word. Move away from the Wraith! Spread out if you can. I will try and get his attention."
With the grace of an Elf, Azalie kicks the oil flask upward, snatching it from the air with one hand. She quickly douses her arrow, coating it in the flammable oil, then strikes her tinder, igniting the arrowhead with a flickering flame.

"Come and get me, if you dare!" Azalie screams at the Wraith and taught it as she releases her arrow.
Azalie releases the flaming arrow, which arcs through the cold night, a streak of fire against the dark. It finds its mark, striking the back of the Ice Wraith`s head, the flames briefly engulfing its ethereal form in a burst of light and heat, dealing 11 points of piercing damage (cut in half by the Wraiths Piercing damage resistance) and 5 points of Fire damage (doubled due to Ice Wraith`s weakness to fire) for a total of 15 points of damage!
Move Action: Moved 20 feet - Azalie swiftly navigates the snow-covered terrain, moving to a different vantage point.

Straining against the cold, Mutt casts "Enhance Ability" on himself, choosing to bolster his Constitution. Clutching the fiery banner with a fierce determination, he charges toward the Ice Wraith. The Blanket and his Frostclaw gauntlets, all soaked in oil go up quickly in flames. The Searing heat does 2 damage to Dorf (Reduced to 1 damage, due to his Rage)

Uptharr utters a divine invocation, channeling his deity`s favor upon the gnome, Halfling and Half-Elf, A soothing light bathes Fizzbum, Dorf and Mutt, granting them a blessing.
Uptharr shouts at Fizzbum. “Now is your chance to escape, I’ll cover you!” As Uptharr prepares to step in front of Fizzbum while the gnome withdraws

Fizzbum swiftly calculates his escape, stepping back and maneuvering around the Ice Wraith`s chilling reach. He executes a series of nimble dodges, each move precise and calculated, allowing him to slip away untouched, while Uptharr covers him and steps in front of the icy undead.
Move Action: Moved 20 feet - Fizz ducks under Mutt`s sled and emerges just outside of the Wraith`s chilling aura.
Uptharr: Move Action: Moved 10 feet - As the gnome disengages, Uptharr brings out his Mace and covers the Gnome`s escape as he steps in between the Wraith and Fizzbum.

As Fizzbum retreats from the fray, Uptharr steps forward, gripping his bronze mace tightly. he closes the distance to the Ice Wraith, raising his weapon high, and channeling power from his Deity.
"By the light, I will banish your chill from this land, fiend!"

As Uptharr`s mace arcs through the air, he calls upon his deity`s power, infusing the strike with Divine Smite. The moment the bronze mace connects with the Ice Wraith, a brilliant bolt of radiant light pierces down from the heavens, converging on the point of impact and enveloping the wraith in a blinding glow. The energy radiates outwards, causing the wraith to howl in agony as the divine light sears through its ethereal form. His weapon deals 2 points of damage (cut in half by the wraiths resistance to Bludgeoning, dealing 1 point), and the divine smite deals 15 points of damage! This damage is not reduced, causing the wraith to take a total of 16 points of damage!
Ice Wraith: Standard Action: Attacking with Life Drain on Uptharr

The wraith recoils from the radiant assault, then, with a malevolent hiss, it extends a spectral hand toward Uptharr, seeking retribution.
In a mocking, icy whisper, it taunts, "Your faith won`t save you from the chill of the grave, paladin."
As the Ice Wraith reaches out with its ghostly hand, aiming to drain the life from Uptharr, the paladin`s combat instincts kick in. With a swift sidestep, he evades the wraith`s chilling touch, the spectral fingers grazing mere inches from his armor.

Mutt: Success - Mutt powers through the chilling cold, shaking off the effects of the Wraith`s power.

With a skilled flourish, Mutt lunges forward, his rapier +1 gleaming as it slices through the frigid air towards the Ice Wraith. The blade, imbued with magical energy, pierces the wraith`s ethereal form, causing shards of icy essence to scatter as it reels from the impact, dealing 5 points of damage!

Mutt sings an inspiring song, weaving a melody imbued with magic to inspire Uptharr. The notes swirl around the paladin, infusing him with a surge of confidence.

Fizzbum conjures a flickering flame in his palm, casting a glow on his face. He sends the fiery orb arcing toward the Ice Wraith, where it collides with a burst of heat and light. As the wraith`s spectral hand makes contact with Dorf, it whispers,

while draining his life essence, causing Dorf`s vitality to seep away as his skin grows paler and his strength wanes, draining 16 points of life. However, Dorf`s Totem Spirit of the bear Rage reduces this damage in half to just 8 points and the wraith recovers 4 points of life. As the wraith`s hand touches Dorf, covered in the flaming blanket, the flames enveloping Dorf deal 3 points of fire damage to the wraith, which are doubled to 6 points for the wraiths weakness to fire.

"Go back to your icy grave you fiend." Azalie lines up her shot.
KILL SHOT: With a calm focus, Azalie draws her bow, the string taut against her fingers, and releases an arrow straight towards the heart of the Ice Wraith. It pierces through the wraith's ethereal form dealing 8 points of damage (cut in half by the wraiths resistance to piercing damage, for a total of 4 points), however the shot is enough, causing it to shatter into a thousand icy shards that dissolve into the night, vanquishing the spectral foe once and for all.
The air fills with a final, mournful wail as the wraith's presence unravels, the cold around them lessening with each passing moment. Gradually, the frost that had clung so tenaciously to their surroundings retreats, and a sense of calm returns to the tundra. The party watches as the last wisps of the wraith's form fade away, leaving behind only the silent, snow-covered landscape.
As soon as Azalie sees her arrow hit, she lets out a loud yell,
“YEAH! Yeah! Hell Yeah!” She had been holding her breath, up till the wraith disappeared.
She starts looking around for friends. Dorf is in flames. She’s not too worried because it’s not going to be the last time. She knows he’s brawny and tough.
“You all right there Dorf? I think I may have something for that.”
As soon as the wraith disappears Dorf stops drops and rolls throwing the blanket and shaking off his gloves. (He Takes a final 5 points of fire damage, cut in half to 2 points by his rage) Once he gets the fire out he will change into a spare set of clothes. He wraps his burns as best he can and then goes to check on Fizz.
“Are you ok my friend? That wraith had a nasty touch,” Dorf shivers remembering the wraith icy grip. Once sure Fizz will be ok, he goes and gathers his and Fizz’s axe beaks. “I suggest we keep moving before something else bad happens.”
He quickly hacks off a few claws from the dead yetis to replace his singed claws in the future.
"Another battle well fought my friends. Nice shooting elf!"
Mutt’s breath comes in heaving gasps as the wraith’s chilling aura dissipates. Mutt remains on his guard for several seconds afterwards, fearful the wraith might reappear from thin air.
Seeing the danger is over for the time being, his attention is drawn to Dorf rolling around in the snow and shaking off the flaming blanket and gloves.
“Ah, shit! Dorf! Hang on!”
Mutt mutters and gestures at the singed Halfling, casting Healing Word. restoring 9 Hit points to the halfling. Once Dorf is able to put out the fire and seems no worse for the fact he was literally on fire moments before, Mutt turns to the small drained form of Fizz. The gnome looks pale, weaker, drained of life somehow. Mutt’s face shows signs of concern as he checks up on Fizz.
Azalie glances over and lay eyes on Fizz. His small body, shriveled and white as a ghost. She starts walking towards him. A few tears welling in her eyes.
“Is fizz going to be ok?” Azalie looks at Mutt. Her face tight as she holds back tears. She can’t do much for him. She wishes she could.
“sniff*sniff*Lets get him up and moving.” Azalie sees Fizz needs a rest. “We have to get moving pretty quickly. That was an intense battle and I’m sure it will gather the wolfs for scraps.”
“Hey Fizz, you all right?”
After checking on Fizz, Mutt goes over and checks on Stout and Ipa. He looks them over and tries to calm their nerves, making sure they know they are safe and the danger has passed.
“If everyone is healthy enough to travel, we should be on our way. Fizz, you can ride on my sled if you need to rest up a bit. Someone else can ride Peck into town for you.”
As Uptharr kneels beside the weakened Fizzbum, his voice is steady, with a compassionate yet firm resolve.
"Fear not, Fizzbum, for the light does not abandon its champions in their hour of need," he says, placing a reassuring hand on the gnome's shoulder. "We shall restore your strength and stand together against the shadows that seek to dim our spirits."
As his companions gather around with looks of concern, Fizzbum manages a wobbly but brave smile and quips,
"Well, I won't sugarcoat it—that felt about as pleasant as a bath in an icy pond! In the early hours, the party arrives at Bryn Shander's formidable gates, where they are met by vigilant city guards, their breaths visible in the cold air. The guards, initially wary, question the party about their late-night arrival and their business in the city. Mutt steps forward, his lute strapped to his back, one of the guards recalls his performances at the Northlook inn. After a brief exchange and a recount of their recent encounter with the Ice Wraith and the recovery of the Dwarves sled, the guards' skepticism wanes and they swing open the city gates. With nods of respect and murmurs of welcome, the guards allow the party to enter Bryn Shander, offering them the safety and warmth of the town,

Fizz's mind is in a fog and his feet feel like they're stuck in the bottom of a swamp mud pool as he walks slowly toward the inn. Seeing the warm glow of the inn's lights he grabs one of the tails of Azalie's cloak and lets her lead the way into the inn, and over to their table. Mutt breathes in and exhales a sigh of relief as the group passes through the gate and back into Bryn Shandyr. The safety of the city walls feel like a comforting, protective blanket to Mutt, keeping the freezing wind and dangers of the tundra at bay.

During the return trip, Azalie thought about many things. She was so worried that Fizz was going to fall to the wraith. He fought so hard and was very brave.
She sees Fizz at a table. She grabs her order of dwarven stew, walks slowly to the table, and sits right next to him. "I'm sorry Fizz. I should have been more alert." Azalie looks down at her stew. Stirring, and stirring.
She starts to think about how sad Hruna and Korux were for the fallen friend. The visions of a vicious attack on Oobok...Sounds of flesh being ripped enters her thoughts, Oobok trying to escape, dying alone.

The journey back to town was rough on Fizz. Every step Peck took seemed to rattle him to exhaustion in every part of his body! He was so cold, and so tired that when the sight of the town in the shadows of the early morning arrived on the horizon, he gave a soft whimper of happiness, and tears leaked from his little eyes.
